Map of Macau
Macau is situated on the south east coast of mainland China, not far from Hong Kong. Although now officially part of China, little has changed in recent years. It is still a popular gambling centre and it still retains much of the charm of its Portuguese architecture, with many cobbled alleys, cafés and European-style churches.
The best time to visit is between October and December, when there is still plenty of sunshine but the humidity is at its lowest. In December, Macau can be chilly. At times of local celebration, such as Chinese New Year, it may be difficult to find hotel rooms, so book well in advance.
The A-Ma Temple is built on the site of a much earlier temple, and is worth a visit. One of the most interesting of the Buddhist temples is the seventeenth century Kun Iam Temple. It incorporates an interesting collection of scrolls and pictures.
Guia Fort is high up above the coast and accessible by cable car. It overlooks most of the peninsula and boasts the oldest lighthouse on the Chinese coast. Far below are the beautiful landscaped Lou Lim Ioc Gardens.
Portuguese influence can be seen in the arcaded Largo do Senado, a lovely square lined with old colonial buildings. Some lovely traditional tiling can be seen inside the senate building. Ruins are all that remain of the old hilltop cathedral of São Paulo, but even these are worth a visit.
